Authors in Forthcoming Volumes


Below are some of the authors and illustrators that will be featured in upcoming volumes of SATA. These include new entries on the swiftly rising stars of the field, as well as completely revised and updated entries (indicated with *) on some of the most notable and best-loved creators of books for children.


Tim Bowler Bowler is an English author who began writing at an early age, but did not make it a career until much later. He started his first novel when he was a young man, but it was not published until he was over forty years old. He has received honors for his first book Midget, a powerful story about an emotionally and physically abused boy. Bowler won a Carnegie Medal for another book, River Boy. He has also received awards and critical acclaim for the novels Shadows and Storm Catchers.

Mette Ivie Harrison Since kindergarten, Harrison has known that she wanted to be a writer. Her first novel, The Monster In Me, is targeted at middle school readers and tells the story of a conflicted thirteen−year−old girl who must overcome emotional problems and learn how to cope. Harrison is currently working on a young adult fantasy novel.

*Kathleen Krull Krull has made a career of educating and entertaining children and young adults. She knew she was headed towards a writing career at an early age and started her career in publishing before becoming a full-time writer. She has created many books spanning a wide range of age groups, topics, and interests. Critics have praised her for encouraging music appreciation in children and many of her books are inspired by her love of and extensive background in music. She has also written numerous nonfiction children's books dealing with such topics as the environment and overcoming adversity.

*Ursula Le Guin Best known for her fantasy fiction, most notably the "Earthsea" books, Le Guin is considered by many to be one of the most creative authors working today. She has drawn children, young adults, and adults into her numerous fantasy and science fiction tales. For her efforts and talent, she has won numerous accolades, including several Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Awards. She has been praised by reviewers for her versatility and depth and has earned a devoted following among her fans. Her powerful imagination has inspired children everywhere.

*Jean Little Canadian author Jean Little is known for her candid and unsentimental portrayals of adolescent life. She once taught children with physical challenges and is partially-sighted herself, so she draws on her real-life personal experiences as a basis for her books. Her characters learn to cope and overcome their disabilities and the challenges that they face. She has won numerous awards for her work, including a Governor General's Literary Award for Listen for the Singing, a Boston Globe−Horn Book honor award for nonfiction, a Canadian Children's Book Award, and a Vicky Metcalf Award.

Madonna Although she is most widely known as a singer, Madonna has recently added children's book author to her already extensive resume, which also includes such honors as an Oscar, a Golden Globe Award and numerous Grammys. Madonna has written five books inspired by her interest in the Kabbalah that teach moral lessons to children. Her first book The English Roses, deals with the subject of envy and the error of judging others without knowing much about them. This book and her second tale Mr. Peabody's Apples, both reached the top of the New York Times best−seller list.

Beth Norling Although she is best known for her illustrative and artistic abilities, Norling has recently begun writing her own self−illustrated tales. Her first self−illustrated book is Sister Night and Sister Day, based on a classic fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, in which she uses watercolor and pencil illustrations to interpret the story. She draws on her experiences as a mother and her inspiration comes from numerous sources, including nature, music, books, and her dreams.

*Helen Oxenbury Although she did not plan on becoming an illustrator, Oxenbury has found a career as a writer and illustrator of many children's books. She was one of the first writers to design "board books," small, thick−paged books intended especially for toddlers. Her collections depict the interests of young children and the many stages of childhood. She has won several awards for her work, including two Kate Greenaway awards and a Boston Globe−Horn Book Picture Book Award.

*Peter Sís Sís is a highly regarded and distinguished illustrator and writer widely recognized for his contributions to children's literature. He has illustrated many books for other authors and has written and illustrated several of his own. He has also made several short films. Many of his tales introduce children to adventures in different cultures and time periods. He has won numerous awards for his efforts, including Caldecott Medal Honors for Starry Messenger: Galileo Galilei and Tibet: Through the Red Box.

Markus Zusak Australian writer Zusak had his first novel published in 1999 and since then has become one of the hottest young authors in Australia. His stories deal with disadvantaged young men struggling to overcome adversity to improve themselves and their lives. His two novels about the Wolfe brothers have won several awards and have earned the author attention and acclaim from critics.
