Balancing her writing career with her busy life as a full-time mom, Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen focuses on presenting factual and sometimes serious subjects such as AIDS for younger readers. In addition to such nonfiction titles as Chemotherapy and The Eiffel Tower, she also sparks readers' creativity with books such as Championship Science Fair Projects: 100 Sure-to-Win Experiments.
In Chemotherapy Bardhan-Quallen explains the history and process behind a common but very invasive cancer treatment. Informational diagrams and photographs supplement her text, offering children visual aids that reinforce a sometimes complex subject. Bardhan-Quallen explains the process through which scientists first realized that poisons could be used to kill dangerous cancer cells without harming the larger organism and how this knowledge led us to the development of modern chemotherapy treatment. Mary R. Hofmann, writing in School Library Journal, commented that the "fascinating" work "provides readers with a complete picture of the research and the quest for a cure." Another School Library Journal critic stated that the work will be of special "interest to student researchers and anyone whose life has been touched by the disease."
Praising the author's "simple, kid-friendly language," Booklist reviewer Roger Leslie noted that in Championship Science Fair Projects Bardhan-Quallen uses "clear directions" and "distinct steps" in devising fun science experiments that involve chemistry, biology, and physics. According to a Kirkus Reviews critic, "while most projects will need significantly elaboration and further research to qualify for a science fair, there's plenty here to intrigue."
