Sidelights

Graham Meadows practiced for nine years as a veterinarian in England before immigrating to New Zealand. There he practiced for an additional four years before taking on the position of curator and veterinarian at the Auckland Zoo. In addition to his career as an animal doctor, Meadows is also a prolific author who has written over one hundred books, most of which seek to educate children about animals. Among his many titles are An Illustrated Guide to Dogs: Their Selection and Care, Cats, Dogs, Newts and Salamanders, and Introducing Frogs and Toads. Skilled in the use of a camera, Meadow has illustrated many of his books with his own photographs.

Meadows told Something about the Author: "My writing stems from my passion, which is to interest my readers, especially children, and provide them with information that not only answers their questions but also gets them thinking. Coming from a veterinary background, my main focus has been in animals, natural history and conservation, but plenty of other subjects interest me and are incorporated into my books.

"I write mainly for children because they are the future. I try to stimulate their interest in a particular subject, and get them to think about issues, in particular the need to respect all forms of life, and have concern for conservation, recycling, and the future of our environment.

"My inspiration for subjects almost always stems from sights that I have seen or photographs that I have taken. The image of a duck preening beside a lake prompted me to write a children's nonfiction book titled Keeping Clean, Getting Dirty.

"My writing has certainly changed, and improved, over the last twenty years. In the early days I wrote the subject matter first and then looked for the photograph to match it. Now I usually select the photograph that best shows the subject matter, and then write the text to describe it."
